Director of Workforce Development and Apprenticeships
The individual in this position coordinates and directs the college’s activities and programs relating to corporate and incumbent worker training, and corporate apprenticeships. Is responsible for curriculum development, program evaluation, grant supervision, budget management, faculty recruitment, faculty professional development. The position is responsible for programs offered to business, industry, government, citizens, and nonprofit agencies.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*
- Provides leadership for the planning, development and delivery of workforce development contacts and apprenticeship programs offered for credit and not for credit.
- Plans personal professional development designed to keep abreast of the technical requirements of employees in modern manufacturing facilities, health care institutions, and business environments.
- Supervises all parts of training for employees in business and industry that are funded with the Michigan New Jobs Training Act.
- Provides ongoing evaluation of programs following the intent and when possible the format of the colleges plan to assess student academic achievement.
- Conducts an annual review of the college programs following the format of the college’s program review process when practical.
- Seeks program input from faculty and advisory committees for the planning and evaluation of programs.
- Develops and oversees the program budget.
- Evaluates faculty and facilitators to ensure high quality, student-centered, effective learning and training environments.
- Recruits qualified faculty and facilitators that meets the expectations of clients.
- Meets regularly with instructors and staff to plan activities, communicate expectations and support professional development activities.
- Supervises the development of course and program curriculum and learner outcomes for programs being offered.
- Actively develops business and professional relationships, represents the college on relevant committees and boards, and performs regular business and corporate site visits to ensure quality apprenticeship experiences and promote training opportunities.
- Seeks and manages grants that provide training opportunities for employees and citizens and funding for the college.
- Performs other related tasks as directed.
SUPERVISION – Works under the general supervision of the college president.
ATTENDANCE – This position requires flexibility in work schedule according to the needs of the division programs, prospective clientele and the requirement to work closely with college support and instructional staff. May at times also at times require evening and/or weekend activity and travel
WORKING CONDITIONS – This position requires flexibility in work schedule and will at times require evening and/or weekend activity and travel. Conditions may vary from a typical office or classroom environment to those of an industrial fabrication facility, outdoor construction site, hospital or other business entity. Individuals must be able to access varied worksites while observing all OSHA safety standards, be able to facilitate meetings in a variety of settings, and undertake regional travel under occasional late night and/or poor weather conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree with an emphasis on community education, educational leadership or other applicable education
- Three to five years’ experience in business or project management, with instructional experience, or combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position
- Broad knowledge of business and manufacturing including manufacturing processes, knowledge of economic development and community enterprise activities, and a general understanding of contracted employee arrangements
- Ability to conceptualize future trends, opportunities, barriers, and solutions to enable the college’s success and growth in continuing education and corporate training
- Ability to win trust, exert influence, and work effectively with business professionals, community leaders, and citizen advisory groups in the building of community partnerships
