Students (or persons claiming the student as a dependent) paying out-of-pocket for tuition, fees, or textbooks over and above grants, scholarships, or third-party payments may qualify for an education tax credit: the American Opportunity Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.
Colleges are required by federal law to report in Box 1 all forms of payments applied to the student account. This includes sources such as student/parent payments, loans, grants, scholarships, and third-party payments up to the tuition/fees assessed.
While it is a good starting point, the Form 1098-T does not contain all of the information to claim this credit/deduction. It is provided to help taxpayers complete IRS Form 8863 to determine their eligibility.
To view your payment history, log into MyKirtland at https://my.kirtland.edu/ics. Select the Student tab at the top. On the right, you will see the “My Account Detail” window. Select the correct academic year and semester and click Submit.
The College cannot provide individual tax advice regarding your eligibility or the calculation of the credit. For further assistance, please contact your tax advisor or refer to Publication 970, Form 8863, and Form 1040 instructions at www.irs.gov.
